MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL GRANT OF £2O TO Y.M.C.A. APPLICATIONS FOR USE OF PARK OVAL. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held in Masterton last night. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided. There were also present: Councillors W. White, A. D. Low, W. H. Judd,. G. D. Wilson, R. Russell, H. E. Gardner, A. T. Jackson, W. Kemp, G. W. Morice, J. Ninnes and C. E. Grey. An .application was received from the Wairarapa Interhouse Association for permission to use the Park Oval on November 22 and to make an admission charge of Is for adults and. 6d for children for the annual marching and drill display. It was decided to grant the use of the Park subject to the Cricket Association agreeing to postpone any fixtures on that date. The headmaster, Hadlow School, was granted permission to use South Park for the school’s athletic sports to be held on Friday, October 24. The Wairarapa Maori Women’s Auxiliary made application for the remission of £5 15s, as rental of the Municipal Hall for their dance to secure funds for soldiers’ parcels. The request was agreed to. It was decided to send letters of appreciation to Mesdames Rishworth and Price for donations of plants to the Park. A petition was received from the residents of Bentley Street, asking that the footpaths south of Perry Street be repaired. It was decided to refer the matter to the engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, for attention. Messrs Harcombe Motors Ltd. claimed compensation for a plate glass window damaged by. flying stone from the excavation in connection with the pipe-lining contract. The Town Clerk's action in forwarding the claim to the contractors for their attention was endorsed. The Masterton Y.M.C.A. was granted £2O towards its funds. The Y.M.C.A. was also granted permission to allow boys’ cricket teams to play on the Park Oval on Saturday mornings and afternoons convenient to the custodian. The Borough solicitor submitted a memorandum of transfer concerning the Douglas bequest property for execution by the council. It was decided to fix the borough seal to the document. The Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs, wrote suggesting a basis of settlement concerning 'water supplied to the Department of Agriculture. The council decided to abide by its decision to reduce the charge to £l5. The secretary of the Wairarapa Cricket Association, Mr G. B. Peterson, applied for the use of the Park Oval for the season. The application was agreed to. The Wairarapa Primary Schools’ Association was granted the use of the oval for weekday cricket. The local Salvation Army Corps was granted permission to hold a street day collection in connection with the Self Denial Week Campaign. An application by the manager of the Regent and Cosy Theatres, Masterton, for permission to screen pictures on Christmas night was granted subject to the programmes being submitted to Councillors Ninnes, Kemp and Russell, for approval.
