OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

A COLLEGE APPOINTMENT (To the Editor) Sir, —I was amazed to read in your paper of yesterday’s date a copy of a letter submitted by Mr G. W. Morice to the Board , of Governors of the Wairarapa College. From the point of view of a letter from an aggrieved teacher to the board, it was no doubt in order. The writer mentioned the fact 1 that he thought that if the issue was in doubt regarding the appointment, he would have been asked "to appear before the board. Surely the very fact of his not being asked to appear was proof that there was no doubt as far as he was concerned. From the viewpoint of an outsider, the pathetic part of the letter was that Mr Morice was also writing to both the other applicants practically telling them that they had no right whatever to apply for a position which had been advertised in the Press. What fine unadulterated sportsmanship! What a splendid example from an aspirant for a principalship to some 500 pupils who are always being taught to play the game for the game’s sake and if they lose, to be good losers. ... It would be much more to the credit of the same gentleman if he were to say to himself and to others, if necessary: “Well I hardly think it was a,fair thing, but I have lost and now the only thing that remains for me to do is to give my wholehearted support to the winner.” And, having decided on that line of action, to write to the successful applicant and be the first to congratulate him—l am, etc., H. T. BROWN. Masterton, October 22. •
