ACUTE TURN
IN BATTLE FOR DONETZ BASIN SUPERIOR GERMAN FORCE ( OF TANKS. ENEMY ATTACKS BROKEN IN OREL AREA. (Received This Day, 12.25 p.m.) LONDON, October 21. The Moscow radio declared that the Russians yepulsed attacks near Staling but the Germans possess a superiority of tanks and the battles for Stalin and the Donetz Basin have taken an acute turn. The Germans in the Orel region, despite their superiority in tanks and in motorised infantry, have been held down to the positions from which they started. They have lost 150 tanks and over a regiment of infantry. The Russians have broken this carefully-pre-pared attack and closed the main roads which the Germans were using. Energetic counter-attacks have held the Germans, who' are looking unsuccessfully for weak spots. The fighting grbws fiercer. Positions at Kalinin have changed hands a number of times.. Particularly heavy fighting is proceeding on the left flank of the enemy. On one section the Germans retreated two fniles, leaving important heights and three villages in Russian hands.
