CARTERTON

RACING CLUB MONTHLY MEETING OF STEWARDS. (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr W. Howard Booth presided over the monthly meeting of stewards of the Carterton Racing Club held last evening in the secretary’s office. There were also present Messrs W. C. Deller, G. A. Vincent, J. C. Harp, P. Bain, Geo. E. Allen, H. Steele, E. J. Matson and R. G. Kemble. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs L. H. Smart, Geo. H. Eaton, V. L. Robinson, J. Johnston and H. J. Brown. The treasurer’s statement showed a dr. balance at the bank of £827 17s 6d. The receipts since the last meeting have been £298 19s 6d.

Accounts amounting to £49 6s 4d were passed for payment. Proposals arising out of the course committee’s meeting were discussed and approved. They included the ploughing of a paddock, the removal of the fence on the northern side of the totalisator house and placing it on the course proper. From this extension a wire fence is to be erected to the western boundary bringing into the lawn the outside booth, thus giving race patrons free access right round the totalisator house and increasing the size of lawn. Other improvements will include additional conveniences. One new member was elected.

A letter from the Thames Racing Club in regard to the taxation on racing clubs, pointed out that it always appeared strange and unfair that club’s handling a small totalisator turnover should be taxed on the same scale as those with large turnovers in the big centres. The Thames Club asked for the co-operation of smaller clubs in placing the question before the Minister.

It was resolved that the club be written to thanking them for its letter and approving of the same. It was decided that the Carterton Club support . the Thames Club in the matter. Mr B. Roberts, M.P., is to be asked to give it his support also.

Matters in connection with a caretaker for the course was left to Messrs W. Howard Booth and J. C. Harp. A discussion took place on the question of painting the club’s buildings. The secretary, Mr Mortenson, submitted a proposal in connection with the work and on the motion of Mr H. Steele, seconded by Mr W. C. Deller, it was resolved to carry into effect the secretary’s proposal.
