HIT BY TORPEDO

AMERICAN DESTROYER WHILE PATROLLING OFF ICELAND NO CASUALTIES REPORTED. HOUSE APPROVES ARMING OF MERCHANT SHIPS. The United States House of Representatives has approved by 259 votes to 138 the arming of merchant ships. The Foreign Relations Committee of the Senate will consider the Bill on Monday.

The vote was taken soon after the news of the torpedoing of a United States destroyer had become known. The destroyer was hit by a torpedo while on patrol 350 miles south-south-west of Iceland. Later in the day, President Roosevelt declared that the attack had clearly occurred in the American defence zone. The destroyer is a vessel of 1,600 tons, one of the newest in the United States Navy. No casualties have been reported and the vessel was able to proceed under her own steam.

The Navy Department says the identity of the attacking submarine is not known, but officials believe her to be undoubtedly German. - This is the first serious incident involving an American warship since President Roosevelt announced the Shoot at sight policy, following the attack on the American destroyer Greer.
