MEETING OF COMMITTEE.

RECIPE FOR SOLDIER’S CAKE

The members of the committee of the Masterton branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union met yesterday to make arrangements for holding a shop day on November 5. It was decided to have the usual stalls with the addition of a Christmas novelty stall. Prizes will be given for the best soldiers’ cake, the best apron, a Christmas novelty and the best toy animal. The same cake also would be a welcome present to friends in Britain for Christmas.

All competitions close at 10 o’clock on the morning of the shop day and arrangements can be made to receive these before that time by ringing telephone No. 468 K, Masterton. Members and friends are asked to make contributions to this special effort for the branch funds. For the busy season-— December to February—the branch will go into recess. The soldier’s cake recipe is as follows:—1.11b flour, lib, butter, 14ozs sugar, 11b mixed fruit, 4ozs candied peel, 2oz cherries, 8 eggs, pinch of salt, 1 teaspoon mixed spice, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, | grated nutmeg, 1 teaspoon each of lemon and vanilla. Method: Beat the butter, sugar and salt to cream. Add eggs one at a time. Then add the floured fruit and the sifted dry ingredients; mix thoroughly and add essences. Bake 3| hours.
