WOMEN MEMBERS
IN THE UPPER HOUSE SHOULD BE AT LEAST 70 YEARS OF AGE. HON. W. PERRY’S SUGGESTION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. “My regret is that we shall not have / the pleasure of seeing the members of the adorable sex in the Council till at least next session,” said Mr W. Perry during the Committee stages of the Statutes Amendment Bill in the Legislative Council yesterday. He was speaking on the clause which provides for the appointment of women members to the Council. “If it is consistent with the dignity of the Chamber,” he said, “I should like to suggest, for the guidance of those who have the appointments to make, for the protection of members who happen to be married and for the peace of mind of their wives, that no member of the adorable sex be appointed if she is under 70 years of age.” (Laughter). “When the ladies have been appointed I will approach the Speaker so that one of them maj r sit beside the hon. gentleman,” said the Leader of the Council, Mr Wilson, amid renewed laughter. He added that he was pleased that the clause was about to pass into law. It had been a blot on the democratic institutions of New Zealand that it had not been passed many years ago.
