MILITARY SERVICE
CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS. SYNOD ATTITUDE. CHRISTCHURCH, October 16. Three hours, almost the whole of its afternoon session, were taken by the Anglican Synod to discuss a motion, with amendments and additions, expressing the views of Synod on conscientious objection to military service. The motion as first moved by the Rev H. S. Hamilton, and eventually passed, was as follows: — “That this Synod, while adhering to the statement in Article of Religion— XXXVII —that it is lawful for Christian men at the commandment of the magistrate to wear weapons and serve in the wars:
(a) Recognises that there are conscientious objections to military service sincerely believed to be founded on the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
“(b) Agrees that objectors should be given advice and assistance by the clergy where required. “(c) Is of opinion that citizens who are granted exemption from military service on conscientious grounds may rightly be required by the State to perform alternative service of a nonmilitary character under civilian control and under conditions of pay, accommodation, and sustenance equal to those granted to the armed forces.”
