PILGRIMS TO MECCA

ARRANGEMENTS MADE AGAIN

IN SPITE OF WAR TIME DIFFICULTIES.!

ASSISTANCE FROM BRITAIN

& INDIA

(British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) RUGBY, October 16. This year again, in spite of war time difficulties, arrangements have been made to transport Moslem pilgrims from India to Arabia and the necessary shipping is being made available.

To enable the fare for the sea journey to be kept down, even in the present circumstances, to a level which will not be prohibitive to the poorer pilgrims, his Majesty’s Government and the Government of India have agreed to guarantee shipowners against loss to the extent of expenditure on elements of the fare which aie the creation of war conditions, such as the cost of war risk insurance on pilgrims' ships and expenditure on account of the abnormal detention of ships. As a result, it has been possible to keep the pilgrimage fares close to last season’s level. A small increase has been necessitated by the general rise in food prices. The comparable cost to pilgrims of a return, deck Bomboy-Jedda will be 200 rupees, as against 195 rupees in 1940. There will be sailings from Bombay, Karachi and Calcutta and measures will be taken to afford the pilgrims the fullest protection.
