FREE FRENCH SEAMEN
AWARD TO SUBMARINE. DARING EXPLOIT RECALLED. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, October 15. One of the most daring exploits of the wax- was recalled when General de Gaulle, accompanied by Admiral Muselier, visited a British port to decorate the members of the crew of a Free French submarine. After the submarine had attacked a German convoy off the Norwegian coast, it was itself attacked and damaged by the convoy’s escort. Despite explosions below, however, the submarine safely negotiated an enemy minefield and made a journey of 500 miles on the surface to its home base.
After an inspection of units of the Free French and Allied fleets, General de Gaulle presented Admiral Muselier with the Order of Liberation and pinned a similar medal on the- tricolour of the submarine. This is the first occasion such an award has been made to any unit of the Free French forces.
Sixteen members of the ship’s company received the Croix de Guerre with palm.
