Cherry Trees in Bloom.
Victoria Street at present is a glorious sight. The cherry trees growing on either side of the street are in full bloom . Their beauty is generally admired by tOAvn residents and visitors alike. Those Avho have not seen the trees should make a point of doing so while the blossom is at its best. Dear Potatoes. New potatoes, with a percentage of Pukekohe soil still adhering to their skins, Avere being sold retail in Wellington yesterday at 6d a lb. One woman who purchased a pound found herself with three potatoes. They had cost her 2d each. Negligent Motor Driver Sentenced. Three months’ imprisonment with hard labour were imposed by Mr Justice Smith in the Supreme Court, Palmerston North, yesterday, on Mervyn Henry Horder Davies for negligent driving on the Foxton-Shannon highway, causing the death of one woman and injury to another. Davies was also prohibited from obtaining a driver’s licence for five years. Potatoes from Australia. Regular supplies of Australian potatoes are now coming forward, all of which are for Government requirements, a Wellington Press Association message states. This week two shipments, totalling 2,211 sacks, were distributed at Wellington and two others, totalling 1,348 sacks, at Auckland, in all about 250 tons. The market for old season’s potatoes from the South Island is almost finished and substantial supplies of new potatoes from Pukekohe are expected at Wellington next week.
