ACQUISITION BY JAPAN AUSTRALIAN WAR CABINET DISCUSSION. SIR R. BROOKE-POPHAM’S VISIT. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The War Cabinet yesterday discussed Japan’s acquisition of an air base in Timor and its views will be placed before a meeting of the War Council today. Air Chief Marshal Sir BrookePopham will attend the meeting. He made a special flight from Darwin to Melbourne to be present.
CONCERN IN MANILA
ALLEGED PRESSURE ON PORTUGAL.

Observers expressed deep concern over Japan’s new daily air service to Timor, which has no commercial possibilities, but will put Japanese planes within easy striking distance of the Netherlands Indies and Australian bases. It is alleged that Japan negotiated the agreement with Portugal by putting pressure on Macao.
