CARTERTON
GOLF CLUB WIND-UP OF SEASON. (“Times-Age” Special.) Weather conditions were perfect on Saturday when the final games of the season were played. In the evening club members assembled at the Masonic Hall, where a very enjoyable ' dance was held. The music was supplied by Udy’s Dance Band, a muchappreciated extra being played by Mrs V. L. Robinson. Mr C. K. Goodin was an efficient M.C. During the evening Mrs W. Henry Booth, wife of the patron, presented trophies won during the season. The following were the winners:— Ladies’ section: Senior championship, Mrs Murray; junior championship, Miss Smart; L.G.U. silver medal, Mrs Candy; L.G.U. bronze medal, Miss Peters; senior club .medal, Mrs Colson; junior club medal, Miss Peters; senior bogey competition, Mrs Colson; junior bogey competition, Mrs Johansen; senior Stableford competition, Mrs Colson; junior Stableford competition, Mrs Court; flag competition, Mrs Johansen; eclectic competition (tie), Mrs Court and Miss V. On Saturday a suit case was stolen from one of the hotels in Carterton. The police are investigating the robbery. ■ ' ' >
Ladies’ Bowling Club.
The secretary of the Carter ton Ladies’ Bowling Club has received an invitation for a rink to be present at the opening of the Island Bay Ladies’ Bowling Club on October 21. Personal Items. Mrs N. Boyne, of Wellington, was a visitor to Carterton during the weekend. At Saturday’s meeting of the Carter Home Committee the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, referred in sympathetic terms, to the death of Mrs E. McKenzie, and a vote of condolence was passed to the relatives. The death occurred in the Buchanan Home, Greytown, on Saturday morning, of Mr Arthur J. Woodley. Deceased was well known in Carterton having resided in the district for many years. He leaves a number of brothers and sisters in various parts of the district. The funeral took place at the Greytown Cemetery today. On the eve of severing his connection with the firm of Messrs Gordon Hughan, Ltd, to go into camp, Mr Maurice Johnston, youngest son of the late. Mr Martin Johnston was entertained by the staff. Mr Johnston has joined the Tank Ordinance and will leave shortly for Waiouru Camp. Mr Rex Porter, on behalf of the firm’s manager, Mr H. Hughan, who is at present in Palmerston North, stated that Mr Johnston had been with the firm for five years. He was a faithful and copscientious employee and the firm was sorry to lose him. On behalf of the management he presented Mr Johnston with an engraved gold signet ring, and from the staff a leather writing wallet and accessories. The health of Mr Johnston was drunk. Mr Johnston suitably replied. The staff of Messrs Hughan’s, Ltd, have lately received letters from former members who are on active service overseas. Ptes. Niel Jensen and D. C. Birch are in Egypt and are fit and well. Private R. Peters, late of Clareville, is in the Canadian Air Force and is enjoying good health. Mr R. Hall, son of Mr and Mrs W. H. liall, of Somerset Road, and a member of the staff of Messrs Hughan’s, Ltd, will leave on November 1 for the Territorial camp at Waiouru for the duration of the war.
