MASTERTON MEETING SECOND DAY’S RESULTS. CHIEF EVENT TO THE MONARCH. (Special Reporter.) There was a large attendance’ at the Opaki racecourse on Saturday for the concluding day of the Masterton Racing Club’s spring meeting. The weather was cloudy but fine. The track was badly cut up and was in a very heavy state on account of Friday’s drenching rain. The times recorded were very slow. The totalisator handled £19,269 10s for the meeting compared with £22,778 last year. The figures were considered to be very satisfactory in view of the unfavourable conditions for the meeting. Although the fields were smaller than on the first day all the events resulted in exciting finishes. The principal event on the card, the C; F. Vallance Memorial Handicap, of one and a quarter miles was won by The Monarch, owned and trained by Mr H. B. Lorigan, Levin. The winner also received a handsome trophy valued at £3O and the jockey, T. Biggs, received a gold mounted whip. The Champion Hack Handicap was won by Te Oriko. The owner, Mr J. H. iKani, received, in addition to the stake money a trophy presented by Mr Walter Cameron. E. J. Lewis, who piloted the winner, received a gold mounted whip. The club's officials, headed by the secretary, Mr N. H. James, conducted the meeting in a praiseworthy manner and on all sides appreciative remarks were heard concerning their efforts. Te Marua led all the way and turning for the home straight drew away from Matalite to win easily. Fox Fur started well but tailed off. BLAIRLOGIE HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, of £lOO. One mile. 1/2 Mr G. L. From the start Tristan took the lead with Maestro and Blue Border close at hand. Miss Leighon was well back. The order of the field remained unchanged till the straight was reached when Esperance Bay and Miss Leighon went to the front. The latter improved her position to win by ;} length.
