BOWLING

PARK CLUB OFFICIAL OPENING OF SEASON. GATHERING ON SATURDAY. The Park Bowling Club’s greens were opened for the 1941-42 season on Saturday. Between fifty and sixty members and'their wives and friends, including the Centre executive members and visitors from Grey Lynn, Sumner, Hokowhitu (Palmerston North), and Hamilton, were present. Above the pavilion flew the club’s new flag, made and presented by Mrs E. J. Burke, wife of the president. In his remarks, the president (Mr E. J. Burke) said that unfortunately, owing to the inclement weather during the week, the main green was not in a condition to be used. He outlined the many improvements that had been carried out during the winter, and expressed his sincere thanks to his committee and the volunteers, especially Messrs R. Jenkins, R. Spackman and G. Dagg, for their valuable assistance. He expressed the hope that the two members on active service would soon be back. He congratulated Mr and Mrs R. Kilmister upon the diamond anniversary of their wedding. Mr Geo. Hayne, president of the Centre, said that it was a great pleasure to be present, and congratulated the club upon carrying on with the opening furfetion, even though there would be no actual play on the main green. He remarked upon the splendid surroundings, and stated that under such ideal conditions, the Park bowlers should be encouraged to make a bold bid for some of the bowling honours during the forthcoming season. On behalf of the clubs of the Wairarapa, he wished the Park Club a very prosperous and successful season. The Rev. W. F. Stent, vice-president of the Centre, expressed the hope that this would be a victory year in every sense of the word, and that by this time next year peace and goodwill would once again reign supreme amongst the nations of the world. Mrs Burke then threw up the kitty, and amidst the applause <jf the onlookers played the first bowl, declaring the green open. Afternoon tea was then served, and later several interesting games of bowls were played.
