ACTING=PRINCIPAL APPOINTED

MR F. J. GAIR.

QUALIFICATIONS AND INTERESTS

Mr Frederick James Gair, 8.A., M.Comm., has been appointed ActingPrincipal of Wairarapa College, during the absence of the Principal, Lieut.Colonel G. G. Hancox, who is taking up military duties for the duration of the war. Mr Gair, who is at present headmaster of Brooklyn School, Wellington, has had a wide experience of both day and evening classes at the King Edward Technical College, Dunedin. His degrees of B.A. and M.Comm. were obtained with First Class Honours (equivalent). He was a Macandrew Scholar (Otago), Sir Robert Stout Scholar (Otago), and as a pupil, an Education Board scholar. He is the author of the text books, “Commerce for the New Zealand Student,” Books 1 and 2.

Mr Gair, who is a returned soldier, after the last war was instructor in French to the New Zealand Mounted Brigade under the educational class scheme conducted then. He was, during his residence in Dunedin, an active member of the Dunedin Shakespeare Club'tof which he was vice-president and chairman, and an active member of the Dunedin Repertory Society. In the field of sport he is an ex-first grade Rugby player (Otago University A) and a former first-grade hockey player (Dunedin Training College). During his residence in Wellington Mr Gair has been an active -wember of the Wellington Thespian and a committee member of'the Wellington Children’s Permanent Health Camp Association. He has been actively interested in a number of the 1941 educational broadcasts to schools. The Acting-Principal expects to take up his new duties on November 1.
