The death has occurred at Pahiatua of Mr Robert Cox Austin at the age of 74 years. Mr and Mrs W. A. Russell, 79 Renall Street, • Masterton, have received cable advice that their son, Pilot -Officer C. G. (“Bill”) Russell, has arrived safely in England. Archbishop O’Shea, S.M., Metropolitan of New Zealand, was a visitor to Wanganui at the week-end, and on Sunday afternoon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church he administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to a large number of adults and children.

Mr George Sterling, Christchurch, has been appointed an honorary life governor of the British and Foreign Bible Society by its London committee as a mark of recognition of the zeal and ability he has shown in the affairs of the society.

Major Kennedy Elliott, N.Z.M.C., has been appointed orthopaedic surgeon to the No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital in the Middle East. Major Elliott has been D.A.D.M.S. to the New Zealand Division, and came through both the Greece and Crete campaigns.

Mr E. Caradus, Chief Inspector of Secondary Schools and Director of Educational Services, R.N.Z.A.F., is visiting Masterton. Mr Caradus is making an inspection of Wairarapa College, and is also looking into matters relating to the classes for Air Force candidates being conducted at the College.
