MASTERTON RACES
SPRING MEETING OPENED AT OPAKI TODAY. CHIEF EVENT TO TRENCH LAW. (Special Reporter.) There is a large attendance for the opening of the Masterton Racing Club's spring meeting at the Opaki racecourse today. Rain fell heavily about 1 p.m. The track is in perfect order. The hard-working band of officials headed by the club’s energetic secretary, Mr N. H. James, have all arrangements complete for the successful running of the meeting. Given the support it deherves there are prospects that the present meeting will be the best held for many years. Results up to the time of going to press are: OPAKI MAIDEN STAKES, of £75. Six furlongs. 11/12 Mr H. J. Stanbridge's Legal. 8.5 (S. Anderson) 1 1/ 1 Mr J. C. Kennedy’s Dungloe 8.5 (W. J. Broughton) 2 5/ 6Mr C. Cunningham's Maharajah. 8.5 (P. Burgess) 3 Also started: 4/11 Alienate; 8/8 First Role; 2/2 Te Marua; 9/10 Matalite; 7/3 Te Awe Awe; 12/5 Colombo Bay; 10/8 Taane Pango; 6/7 Drake's Drum; 14/13 Sterling; 15/16 Lacella; 15/15 Fasolt; 3/4 Black Sovereign; 13/14 Trekalong. Te Marua was fourth. Won by four lengths; two lengths. Time, 1.19 2-5. Maharajah and Dungloe led the field until half a furlong when Legal took charge from Dungloe and Maharajah. Drake’s Drum, Fasolt, Te Marua and Black Sovereign. On the home stretch, Legal was two lengths in front from Dungloe with Maharajah a length back. Legal improved his position to win comfortably by four lengths. Two lengths separated Dungloe and Maharajah. SOLWAY HANDICAP, of £lOO. One mile. 3/3 Mr H. B. Lorigan’s Gothic, 7.11 (T. Biggs) 1 2/1 Mr S. F. Cooper’s Red Dash, 9.0 (P. Burgess) 2 7/7 Mr E. J. Adams's Yurilla, 7.7, (N. Vaughan) 3 Also started: 1/2 Lord Defoe: 5/5 Mansura; 6/6 Inform: 4/4 Olein. Inform was fourth. Won by three lengths; two lengths. Time, 1.49. Yurilla led from Lord Defoe and Olein to the straight, Red Dash and Gothic being at the tail of the field. Yurilla was in front to the distance when Gothic came very fast on the outside to win -easily. Red Dash came away to beat Yurilla out of second place. Lord Defoe dropped out at the turn and finished last. Inform was a good fourth.
RIVERSDALE HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP, of £lOO. One mile and a quarter. 5/4 Mr J. H. Kani's Te Oriko, 9.0, (E. J. Lewis) 1 2/1 Mr T. C. N. Ball’s Esperance Bay, 10.11 (R. Hawes) 2 1/2 Mr L. C. Breakwell's Hunting Cat. 10.9 (A. Lord) 3 Also started: 3/3 Cuisinier; 4/5 Pern; 8/8 Maestro; 6/6 Metonymy; 7/7 Tractometer. Metonymy was fourth. Won by half a length; two lengths. Time, 2.20. From the start Pern was the early, leader and was later joined by Maestro. At the turn for the straight Te Criko went, to the front followed by Esperance Bay and Hunting Cat. Te Criko successfully headed off a strong challenge by Esperance Bay. MASTERTCN HANDICAP, of £l6O. One mile) 3/4 Mr N. W. Nelson’s Trench Law, 8.2 (N. Vaughan) 1 4/3 Mrs A. M. Goodman’s Master Cyklon, 7.9 (D. Redstone) 2 6/6 Mr.G. L. Stead’s Miss Leighon, 7.0 (C. Bowry) 3 Also started: 5/5 Gladynev; 1/1 Duncannon; 2/2 Majority; 8/8 Siglow; 7/7 White Rajah. Majority was fourth. Won by two lengths; one length. Time, 1.51.
Trench Law. after being well back came through at the turn and went away to win easily.
