AFTER THE WAR
CANADIAN REHABILITATION PLAN. WIDE EXTENSION ANNOUNCED. OTTAWA, October 3. A wide extension of the Government’s rehabilitation plans for members of Canada’s Armed Forces has been announced by the Minister ol Pensions and National Health, the Hon. lan Mackenzie. The new plan provides: — • , (1) Young men whose academic or professional education was interrupted by service in the armed forces may secure assistance if needed to. enable them to complete their education, (2) Discharged men who can be assisted in obtaining employment by means of vocational training couises will be provided with subsistence while receiving the appropriate training; . . . ... (3) Discharged men experiencing illhealth not directly attributable to military service, but hampering them, in obtaining employment, may .be given financial aid while undergoing remedial treatment already available; (4) Discharged men who return to or take up private enterprise such as farming may be assisted during the period in which they are awaiting returns; (5) All ex-servicemen who, through no fault of their own, experience delay in obtaining civil employment will receive unemployment protection, at least equal to that available for civilians under the Unemployment Insurance Act; (6) After a discharged person has been in insurable employment for fifteen weeks within any period of twelve months after discharge his military service subsequent to July 31, 1941, will be counted as insured employment under the Unemployment Insurance Act. In any period of unemployment prior to the completion of fifteen weeks an ex-serviceman shall have the protection of out-of-work benefits under a post-discharge plan. In addition, the Government is considering an employment programme during the post-war transition period.
