OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

WAR ANO SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln reply to the letter of last Saturday re the 2s in the pound tax, I think the lady (?) who wrote that did not know that the Is National Security Tax helps oui‘ brave lads to go into the battlefield to fight for our security, better equipped with guns, planes, tanks, etc. Anyhow, who minds paying? Isn’t it a very small contribution compared to the sacrifice the lads, make? We would still have to pay, and rightly so, even if there was a change of Government. What does the other Is tax provide? Social security against unemployment, free medicine,'free hospital, free maternity, invalidity pension, old age pension, also superannuation, etc. Did one ever receive anything like the benefits when we paid lOd in the £ in the time of the last Government? If we never have to receive any of these benefits won’t we be better off but we will be helping some other unfortunate to see a silver lining through the dark clouds. The lodges do a wonderful work, but if I remember rightly, one has to pass a doctor and be Al fit before they are admitted. We should all be grateful for our health. We never know when our health may change.—Yours, etc.. “THANKFUL.” Kaiparoro, October 9.
