WOMEN’S DIVISION

CARTERTON BRANCH PARCELS APPRECIATED BY SOLDIERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union Mrs Ordish presided over a good attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames K. Gioves, Walsh, O’Keefe, Carswell and Miss Thompson. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mesdames W. Hall, L. Rayner and Miss Thompson. Mrs Allen gave a short report on provincial matters and stated that the appeal for eggs for the orphanages was meeting with a good response. The secretary was instructed to write letters of thanks to the follow-ing:-—The P. and A. Society for the use of a room, Mr J. Udy for the making of a wool spinner, and Mr Howard Booth for the gift of a fleece, Mrs Archer was also thanked for making trays for the Division. Mrs H. Hodder gave a report on knitting activities for the month and alslo on the special gathering held to raise funds for the soldiers’ parcels which showed, a profit of £4. Mrs Hodder read letters of thanks received from soldiers on final leave for parcels of knitted goods. Mrs Stretton reported on the last meeting of the Social Club. The winner of the cake donated by Mrs McKenzie was Mrs W. Hall. During the afternoon the presentation of the points prizes in connection with the flower show were made by Mrs P. Hodder as follows: —Mrs Couper, 1; Mrs Allen, 2; special prize, Mrs W. Knowles.

A roll call: “Where did you meet your husband?” proved very amusing. It was decided that the competitions for next month should be: —Preserved ginger cake; mittens, 2 classes (A, knitted, B, made from old sock tops). Competition results were as follow: —Ginger biscuits: Mrs McKenzie, I, 2, and 3; most old rags, Mrs J. Court (481b5.) 1, Mrs W. Daysh (401b5.) 2, Mrs Ordish (321b5.) 3; best bloom, Mrs Couper 1, Mrs Allen 2, Mrs L. Rayner 3;best shrub, Mrs Couper 1,2, and 3. The hostesses were Mesdames C. Jensen Senr., C. Jensen Junr., F. Court, J. Court, S. Swan, and J. Warrington.
