GERMAN CLAIMS
ADVANCE ALONG THE SEA OF AZOV ALLEGED PURSUIT OF “BEATEN ENEMY.” AND CAPTURE OF SOVIET STAFF. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 11 'a.m.) LONDON, October 7. A German spokesman claimed that the Germans have captured Mariupol (on the north coast of the Sea of Azov) and Berdyansk. A German communique says: “In the course of the new operations a bitter battle occurred in an area north of the Sea of Azov, where, side by side with their allies, German troops are pursuing a beaten enemy. The staff of the Soviet 9th Army was taken prisoner. The com-mander-in-chief escaped by air. Operations in other sectors of the front are progressing according to plan.”
The Berlin radio declared that the Soviet troops encircled in the Leningrad area again attempted to break through on October 6, using infantry, tanks, artillery and planes. The attacks, which were launched repeatedly, with great obstinacy, were repulsed.
