‘ SCHOOL AFFAIRS i / MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton District 'High School Committee was held last night and was presided over by the chairman, Mr H. J. McKenzie. There were also present: Messrs W. E. Knowles, J. Finn, A. G. Rabbits, P. Beere, C. K. Goodin, G. Stark, R. Williams and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. The chairman, on behalf of the committee extended a very hearty welcome to Mr A. G. Rabbits ,who had ' been absent on leave through illness. He hoped Mr Rabbits would in future enjoy good health. Mr Rabbits thanked the chairman for his kindly remarks and said that he was pleased to be able to attend to his committee duties again. The Education Board wrote in regard to the heating of the school stating that the matter had been deferred pending the recovery of Mr Drummond from an illness. The Board also wrote relative to the .basketball court and the legal position in regard to spending funds on leasehold property. It was resolved that the secretary write to the Board stating that the committee had no intention of placing the courts on leasehold land. The treasurer reported small credit balances in the general and special funds. Accounts amounting to £27 9s 2d were passed for payment. The headmaster’s report showed that there was considerable sickness among the children and in consequence the attendance had dropped to 366. Necessary repairs reported by the headmaster are to be attended to. The chairman referred to the -illness of Mr H. T. Leete who was an inmate of the Greytown Public Hospital. Mr Leete, he said, was improving in health. The secretary was instructed to write a letter of sympathy to Mr Leete and wish him a speedy recovery. The question of the entertaining of the school teachers on the eve of the summer vacation by members of the committee and wives is to be discussed at the next meeting.
BELVEDERE FACTORY
NIGHT SHIFT NEXT WEEK. Next week a. night shift will'be worked at the Belvedere cheese factory milk supply begins to decrease. At the present time the milk brought to the factory is almost equal to the quantity received during the Hush of the season. The cheese output yesterday was 61 which is only 2 short of the height of production last year. It is proposed to work two vats on the night shift.
SAFETY FIRST
LECTURE BY AUTOMOBILE OFFICER. On Thursday next, Mr P. Beere, the Wairarapa Automobile service officer, will deliver a lecture to the children attending the Carterton District High School on “Safety First.” A short film will be shown to the children in the bandroom as to the dangers of road traffic.
DRUIDS’ LODGE
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. Arch Druid Bro. Alex Stretton presided over the fortnightly meeting of Totara Lodge No. 3, U.A.0.D., held last night. . Three declarations on the sick funds were received, four declared off and a medical report was received from one member certifying that he was still unfit to,, resume any occupation. A vote of condolence with the widow and family of the late Bro. Percy Aston was carried. The Arch Druid made reference to the death of Mrs E. McKenzie, wife of the lodge secretary and in doing so eulogised the great service rendered to the lodge by the late Mrs McKenzieover a period of years, her services being cheerfully given. Bros. R. Smith, P. Reid, H. Matson, J. M. Nicholls, H. Bassett, W. Fryer, F. Taplin, A. J. Dew spoke in 'a similar strain, after which the lodge; went into recess for a short period as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased. P.S. Bro. E. McKenzie thanked the lodge membersfor their expression of sympathy with hint) in his bereavement and also for the appreciative references concerning the work of the late Mrs McKenzie. Bros. T. E. Geange and A. J. Ordish gave notice that they had entered Trentham Military Camp for service overseas. It was reported that Bro. Wilf. R. Harry had entered the Masterton Hospital for treatment. The funeral claim for a member’s wife amounting to £lO was passed for payment, in addition to £26 19s 6d Social Security and lodge sick pay. Wairarapa Gun Club. Next Saturday a competition for Mr J .A. Lawrence’s trophy will be fired on the club's grounds, Norfolk Road, Waingawa. On the 18th and 19th October the Wellington Provincial Clay Bird Championship will be held at Waingawa. The competitions will commence at 9 o’clock ’each morning. Lunch and afternoon tea will be supplied free to shooters. It is expected that large entries will be received from all parts of the ’Wellington district. The ’Wellington Provincial Championship (25 birds from an 18 yard rise) will be fired on Saturday, October 18. Personal Items. Mrs Barnicoat, executive member of the Dominion Federation of Women’s
Institutes, will be a visitor to Carterton and will be the speaker at this month’s meeting of the Carterton branch of the Women's Institute. Mrs W. Shanks, of Dannevirke, is a visitor’to Carterton and is the guest of Mrs Green, Carterton. Miss Joyce Benge, of Dannevirke, was a visitor to Carterton for the Te Tau —Green wedding. A little son of Mr and Mrs J. Crawford, of Dalefield, fell at his father's home yesterday and broke a collarbone. He was brought into Dr. W. J. C. Wells surgery when his injury was attended to. S.M. Court. The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate's Court will be held tomorrow.
