BATTLE OF ATLANTIC

NEW & POWERFUL EFFORT BY GERMANS REPORTED BY AMERICAN CORRESPONDENT. TALK OF SIX HUNDRED , U-BOATS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 6. The Battle of the Atlantic is entering a crucial period, states Mr Drew Middleton. correspondent of the Associated Press of America, in a message from Reykjvavik (Iceland). He adds that a great onslaught by German submarines, comparable in scope to that of March and April is well under way. There is no complacency among naval officials and merchant captains here. All regard the situation as very critical. It is believed that six hundred submarines are operating in the Atlantic, plus two hundred Focke Wulfe Kurriers and Condors for observation and bombing. Despite increasing U-boat losses, the Germans it is claimed, are maintaining full strength.
