OF MEN & HEAVY EQUIPMENT

MADE BY THE NAZIS ATTEMPT TO SMASH DEFENCES OF LENINGRAD. MOVEMENTS AGAINST MOSCOW. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.20 p.m.) LONDON, October 6. The southern movement of the pincer action against Moscow apparently is based on Roslavl (230 miles south-west of Moscow), and unquestionably is the stronger of the 'two movements, while the northern pincer arm is being pushed from the area south of the Valdai Hills (200 miles north-west of Moscow). A heavy attack is also being directed towards Kharkov. The Russians everywhere &re stubbornly defending every inch of ground. The Tass Agency reported from Leningrad today that the Nazis were making huge sacrifices of men and heavy equipment in attempts to smash Leningrad’s defence line. These' attempts were repeatedly repulsed. A German communique states that offensive operations oh the Eastern front brought fresh successes yesterday. It adds: ‘(The Germans repulsed landing attempts east of Leningrad by strong Soviet forces, supported by the Kronstadt batteries and

coastal artillery. Simultaneously a violent attempt from within to break through the encirclement collapsed. The enemy suffered heavy and bloody losses.”
