The Rt. Hon. ‘J. G. Coates returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday. Mr C. Larsen, of South Road, Masterton, has returned home after attending the national sales at Feilding. The Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Labour, arrived at Auckland on Saturday and attended a conference on waterfront work yesterday.
Messrs A. Owen Jones and J. C. Corbishley (Masterton) returned yesterday from a Home Guard Officers’ course held at Palmerston North. The death occurred at the Masterton Hospital yesterday of Mr Thomas William McDowell, at the age of 63 years. The late Mr McDowell, who had been in indifferent health for a number of years, had resided in Masterton for the past six years. He was formerly a resident of Christchurch, and is survived by four sisters and a brother. He was unmarried. The interment will be a private one. Sergeant A. A. Taylor, R.N.Z.A.F.v England, has been reported killed in an aeroplane accident, according Mo cabled advice received yesterday by his parents, Mr and Mrs G. Taylor, Wanganui. Sergeant Taylor, who was 21 years old, joined the Air Force about 18 months ago. He was educated at Wanganui Technical College and after leaving school, was employed in the Railways Department as a cadet. He was a member of the Wanganui. Technical College Old Boys Rugby football team and represented Wanganui in the 1939 season as a forward. He was also a member of the Wanganui Rowing Club.
The selection of Mr W. B. Fitchett as the National Party candidate for Hutt was announced yesterday. The sitting member for Hutt is the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash. Mr Fitchett is following in the footsteps of his father, the late Dr. Fred Fitchett, C.M.G., who before he was appointed SolicitorGeneral, and afterward Public Trustee, was member for Dunedin Central in Mr Seddon’s Liberal Party. The new candidate has been a resident of Lower Hutt for the past 10 years, and has his own business in Wellington, W. B. Fitchett, Ltd., advertising specialists. He was educated at the Terrace School, and Wellington College, and is a member of the board of governors of the colleges. The funeral of the late Mrs M. G. Massey took place in Masterton yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance, including a good representation of members of the Masterton Hospital staff. The Rev. David McNeur conducted a service at the Chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service Ltd., and also officiated at the cemetery. Wreaths were sent by the chairman.and members of Wairarapa Hospital Board, nurses and sisters of Masterton Hospital, Wairarapa Hospital Board Office staff, porters and domestic staff of Masterton Hospital, laundry staff and sewing room staff of Masterton Hospital, outdoor staff of Masterton Hospital, staff of Wairarapa College, Masterton staff of Wairarapa Electric Power Board, besides many others from private sympathisers. The pallbearers were Messrs M. Manson, V. Clendon, T. V. Clendon, J. H. Haise, F. Wesney and M. Malmo.
