A fine of £lO was imposed on C. H. Hood in the Magistrates’ Court at Palmerston North yesterday for crossing the railway line when a train was approaching, the magistrate saying that absolute indifference had been shown in this case by defendant.

No Christmas Day Pictures. The Wellington City Council last night decided to decline applications received for permission to screen pictures on Christmas Day next. The Mayor, Mr Hislop, said that permission had been granted in previous years, but declined last year. Cr. W. Appleton said that the theatre employees had pleaded for a free day on Christmas Day. Welcomed Home. Three Wairarapa soldiers who have just been invalided home—Privates W. J. Ritchie and S. N. Shirley and Bandsman F. Three cars, staffed by Red Cross personnel in uniforms, were also in attendance to convey the men to their destinations.

Storm Damage in Wellington. Authority for urgent work in repairing storm damage to be put in hand immediately at a cost not exceeding £10,000) was granted at- a meeting of the Wellington City Council finance committee last night. It was further decided to seek immediate enactment of a draft amendment to the Municipal Corporations Act, 1933, empowering the council to spend moneys raised under the authority of the Local Bodies Finance Act, 1921-22, to meet flood damage, to assist propertyowners, make advances to them, and reimburse the district' fund from loan moneys. The need for immediate action was emphasised, and fears were also expressed of the possibility of a recurrence of the trouble on a similar scale. Suggestions were made that some restrictions should be placed on the erection of buildings on precari-ously-situated sections.

Bull Sale. At the Manawatu bull sale held at Feilding. last week keen interest was taken in the selling of the star lot of the catalogue, Tuhirangi Silver Star, from the great cow Ku Ku Silverbrook V.H.C., C.P., from Meon Mercury, a son of the outstanding bull Brampton Dreaming Sam (Imp.). This young bull, which was sold on account of Mr R. J. U. Wellington, of Masterton, was purchased by Mr C. Larsen, on behalf of his son, Mr L. Larsen, of South Road, Masterton, for his Kainga-Pai Stud at the record price of 150 guineas, the highest price paid for a yearling bull in New Zealand for some years.

Central and East Schools.

A happy little function took place at the close of the regular monthly meeting of the Central School Committee last evening. In recognition of the invitation of the committee to the Parents’ Association of the Central and East schools to be present at the monthly meeting, the ladies of the Central Association provided a dainty supper, which was much enjoyed by all. Emphasis was laid by the chairman, Mr J. MeV. Calwell, on the fine spirit of cooperation existing between the asociations and the committee. It was decided by the Central Parents’ Association to arrange one extra dance at the Central School on October 18, and hand the proceeds to the East Association.

The St. John Ambulance Brigade wifi hold a further dance at the Masonic Hall, Masterton, on Saturday night. Features of the dance will be novelty dances and a good supper. The music will be supplied by Jack, Barnes’s full orchestra and Cadet Superintendent C. S. McQuade will carry out the duties of M.C. In view of the worthy objects of the Brigade, and the good work it carries out, it is anticipated that there will be a large attendance.
