ST. MATTHEW’S CHURCH
COMMUNION SERVICE YESTERDAY.
Over three hundred communicants attended the celebration of holy communion at St. Matthew's Church, Masterton, yesterday morning. The service, which was fully choral and was a most impressive one, was conducted by the Ven. Archdeacon E. J. Rich. Many new communicants made their first communion following the confirmation service last Sunday. Special prayers were offered for members of the church on active service.
The annua] communicants’ breakfast, which followed the service, was a particularly bright, and happy function and the large attendance taxed the capacity of the Parish Hall. Archdeacon Rich presided.
The well-laden tables were artistically decorated with bowls of Iceland poppies. A capable band of willing helpers attended to the needs of those present with commendable efficiency.
Mrs Moss and Miss Rose Robinson sang a duct for which they received well deserved applause and Mr S. Taylor gave a much appreciated violin item. Mr Miller Hope was the accompanist. At a suitable interval Archdeacon Rich stated that on such occasions he asked a layman of the church to say a few words and he introduced the speaker, Mr J. F. Jaine.
Mr Jaine, who received a most attentive hearing, gave an appropriate address. He urged all present, particularly the new -communicants, to take a full and active part in the work of the church,' which he likened to a great team. He said that in sport a member of the team would not let the team or the captain down and he stressed the point that none should let the. captain of the church down. Archdeacon Rich expressed thanks to all who had assisted in any way with the successful running of the function. He mentioned in that connection the names of the entertainers, : the speaker, Mr Jaine, the ladies and the W.F.C.A. for the loan of tables. The function concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.
