RUSSIANS ADVANCING
STRONG COUNTER-ATTACKS IN UKRAINE Position Said to be Vastly Improved FIERCE BATTLE IN PROGRESS ON CRIMEAN ISTHMUS ALL ENEMY ATTACKS REPELLED IN LENINGRAD AREA LONDON, October 5. The Russians are advancing’ in the Southern Ukraine in the great battle now raging north of the Crimea. The Isthmus of Perekop, the three-mile bottleneck approach to the Crimea, is the- scene of one of the fiercest battles yet fought on the , Eastern frofit. The “Pravda’s” correspondent says Marshal Budenny s troops have vastly improved their positions in the Ukraine. Following a series of counter-attacks they recaptured 30 villages in one sector and in another area advanced 20 miles in 36 hours. They are still advancing, mopping up as they go. The Germans claim to have taken 12,000 prisoners round Perekop, but there is no confirmation of this report. In the Leningrad area, Moscow announces, all German attacks have been defeated. The enemy suffered heavy Josses. The Director of the Soviet Information Bureau estimates that German losses since the Russian campaign began now exceed 3,000,000 men, killed, wounded or missing. The Russian losses are 1,128,000, including prisoners. ALL POSSIBLE HELP Assurances by British Ministers LONDON, October 5. Mr A. V. Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty, spoke today of the urgent need of helping Russia. “We are going to see that everything possible shall be done to help Russia, he said “People who know realise the truth of this. We shall be with her to the end, which, we believe, is going to be victory. Dr Dalton, Minister of Economic Warfare, said the war was one and indivisable. The success of the Moscow conference, together with Russia’s favourable declaration regarding the Atlantic Charter, showed the unity of purpose of the three great Powers—the British Commonwealth, the United States and the Soviet Union.
