At Northcote, Auckland, on Thursday, the death occurred of Mr Jonas Dumbleton, formerly of Nireaha. The death occurred in Wellington on Saturday of Mr Arthur Ballinger, a former New Zealand champion rifle shot, at the age of 80 years. Mr Alex. Chambers, of Eketahuna, died in the Pahiatua Hospital yesterday at the age of 75 years. Many years ago deceased resided in Master 1 ton. The Rev. H. B. Burnett, Otautau, has been appointed a chaplain to the forces, and will be stationed in the meantime at Waiouru Camp, where he will take up his duties this month. The Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland, Bishop of Wellington, is visiting Auckland. He preached at St. Mary’s Cathedral yesterday, and the Synod sermon will be delivered by him at the opening of the Auckland Diocesan Synod today. Lieutenant-Colonel Herbert A. Lord, Salvation Army commander in Malaya, who recently arrived in New Zealand, is to undertake a tour of the southern districts in place of Commissioner J. Evan Smith, commander of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, who fs unable to travel because of illness. The death has occurred of Mr Francis William Fitzpatrick, Hastings, at the age of 70 years. Born at Prebbletown, South Island, he came to Hawke’s Bay in 1897, and for 10 years was engaged in farming in the HastingsNapier district. He then moved to Waipiro Bay, where he took over the Tawhiti Hotel. Following this he returned to Hastings, living in retirement. Always keenly interested in the turf, Mr Fitzpatrick was responsible for the establishment of the Mummers' Lodge. Some of his best-known horses were Sandstream, Mummer, Donsal, Kilbird, Mockingbird, Multiciple, Raupare and Carrilion.
