MASTERTON ASSOCIATION TUG-OF-WAR CHALLENGE. PROPOSALS FOR NIGHT SESSION. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Masterton A. and P. Association was held in Masterton last night when the president, Mr R. E. Gordon Lee, presided over a good attendance of members. A letter was received from Mr Laird Meredith resigning his position as vice- | president owing to war conditions and a shortage of benzine preventing his attendance at all meetings necessary as a vice-president. The president and other members spoke in appreciation of his services over many years. The resignation was accepted with regret and the opinion expressed that later on when times were more normal that he would again complete his term as a vice-president and president. The chairman then called for nominations to fill the vacancy. Mr T. A. Brown was unanimously appointed to the position. It was then agreed that Mr Laird Meredith be appointed to the general committee in place of Mr Brown. Mr W. F. McLaren wrote offering to go off the committee so as to retain Mr Meredith’s services. He pointed out that he also found it increasingly difficult to attend all meetings. Mt McLaren was thanked for his offer but under the circumstances there was no need for him to go off the committee. A letter was received from the R.S.A. regarding land settlement schemes. The association was in sympathy with the movement but as the matter was being handled by the Farmers’’ Union, the members of which were mostly members of the A. & P. Association, it was thought better for the Farmers’ Union to handle the matter and save any duplication of'effort. The Wairarapa P. & A. Society wrote accepting a challenge for a tug-of-war match between the two societies. This would be held at Carterton after the Grand Parade at the forthcoming show. It was decided to ask Carterton to appoint an umpire. The Feilding Association wrote suggesting a meeting at Feilding to discuss anything of importance affecting Eastern and Western Royal Show districts. It was resolved to reply that the association did not know of anything for discussion and unless there ' was anything important it was felt benzine should be conserved. Two new members were elected. The reports of the ground and finance committees were adopted. f Regarding a night show, Mr P. F. Fagan was asked to try to arrange a programme. It was decided to adopt the same schedule of classes as last year. Mr Colin Mac Kay, of the Young Farmers’ Club, said they had decided to make a donation of £5, half to be credited for the use of a meeting room and half for the show judging competitions. The Young Farmers’ Club was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Marshal stewards were appointed as follow: Parade marshal, chairman of Light Horse Committee; announcer, Mr T. V.
