LOCAL AND GENERAL
Petition Withdrawn. A petition presented to the House of Representatives recently on behalf of lady hairdressers of Masterton has been withdrawn by Mr J. Robertson, M.P., who was in charge of the petition, at the request of the petitioners. Married Men for Army. It now appears unlikely that any married men in the no children class will be called up for military service this year. Some time ago October was announced as a possible time for the first ballot of married men, but it' is now possible that even the ballot may not be taken before the end of the year. Plunket Society. The following subscriptions and donations to the Plunket Society are acknowledged: —Mrs A. B. Burns, £1; Mrs D. Donald, 10s; Mrs A. L. Paterson, 10s; Mesdames L. W. Fitzgerald, E. H. Doherty, J. H. Boustridge, E. Holmwood, G. R. Ready, A. H. Ward, M. J. O’Leary, A. D. McKay, D. Richards, E. W. Wickens, B. S. Pringle, 5s each. Women Herd Testers. The Wellington-Hawke’s Bay Herd Improvement Association has taken a new line in connection with herd testing, having decided to invite applications from young women between the ages of 20 years and 35 years for positions of herd testing officers. The selected applicants will receive a course of instruction at Massey Agricultural College, commencing about November 11. Applications are to close on October 11. Price of Tea. With a view to avoiding a temporary increase in the wholesale and retail prices of certain brands and grades of tea in New Zealand, the Price Investigation Tribunal has agreed to an unusual procedure being adopted by a number of firms. It was stated yesterday that the tribunal had arranged that the firms concerned should themselves absorb a rise in the price of certain recent shipments of tea, for which they might reasonably have sought permission to ask more. In return, it had been arranged that' the companies should be reimbursed when they were importing the same tea more cheaply, as they would then be permitted to continue selling at the present figure, till they had recovered the amount they had foregone. Territorials for Training. All the immediately available men for the Territorial Force in the Central Military District have been called up for training. The drafts which went into camp this month, exhausted the supply. The immediately available total was represented by the numbers already balloted and not, up till this month, sent into training, less the unfit, those needing remedial treatment, those granted postponements or adjournments by manpower committees or, in the cases of conscientious objectors, exemption by appeal boards, and those with appeal? pending. The first mobilisation next year of men without previous training will largely be from those who will be drawn in the ballot of Wednesday next, plus any from previous ballots who have been made fit | and those whose terms of postponement ’of training have, expired.
