APPEALS DISMISSED

COLLEGE PRINCIPAL & 'STAFF MEMBER CALLING UP FOR TERRITORIAL SERVICE. APPLICATION BY BOARD. An appeal by the Wairarapa College Boat’d of Governors against the calling up of Lieutenant-Colonel G. G. Hancox. E.D., Principal of Wairarapa College, and Major li. J. Fowler, a member of 1 he College staff, in respect to Territorial service, was dismissed this morning by the 7B (Wairarapa) Man Power Committee, sitting in Masterton. The chairman, Mr T. Jordan, presided. With him were associated Messrs F. Colo and J. W. Card (Featherston). Mr Card deputised for Mr L. T. Daniell, who in addition to being a member of the committee is a member of the College Board. Messrs W. R. Nicol (chairman) and H. M. Boddington (secretary) addressed the committee on behalf of the College Board and Lieutenant R. C. Wood presented the case for the Army Department. Both reservists gave evidence. Lieutenant-Colonel Hancox is officer) commanding the First Ruahine Regiment, of which Major Fowler is second in command. In a statement, made subsequently to the sitting, the chairman, Mr Jordan, said: “The case of Major Fowler did not present very much difficulty. The committee was of opinion that his place on the staff should readily be filled, while his value as an efficient military officer to the training camps was outstanding. The case of Lieutgn-ant-Colonel Hancox called for a very careful weighing of the pros and cons of the situation and the committee came to the unanimous conclusion that the claim of the Army was paramount. It may be that the Boat’d of Governors will have some anxiety on this account, and it may be that the school, both the staff and pupils, will have to make some small sacrifice because of this decision, but this is a contribution that the committee bxpects to be made willingly and courageously.” .
