Patriotic Raffle Result.

The man’s knitted cardigan, donated by Mrs Douglas, Perry Street, for the local patriotic funds, has been won by Mrs R. Baker. Fall at School . As a result of a fall at the Te Ore Ore School yesterday, Tangi Ellers, aged 6, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital yesterday with a fractured elbow. The child’s condition is stated to be saitsfactory. Social Club. A meeting of the State Kitchenette social and sports club was held in Masterton last night to discuss further entertainment and activities for members. Mr A. McHattie presided. It was decided to hold a “mystery” tramp on Sunday week and to hold a picture party next week. Following the meeting, a learn to dance session was held for club members. Table Tennis. The Wairarapa Table Tennis Association held a Yankee tournament in the Scout Hall, Masterton, last night. The presentation of trophies won during the season was made by Mr W. Day, president. He congratulated th.e winners on their success, and mentioned that a high standard of play had been set. The Yankee tournament was won by Messrs W. Greenlees and J. Catherall. Messrs I. Coleman and T. Grant were runners-up. Silver Thimble Appeal. A “silver thimble” appeal on the lines of similar schemes undertaken overseas during the last war and in the past two years is being launched in Otago by the Mayoress, Mrs. A. H. Allen, to assist the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council’s Fund for the postwar relief and assistance of returned soldiers and their dependents. ' The silver thimble scheme originated in. Great Britain during the last war, when the women of England gave 65,060 thimbles, which paid for’ two ambulances. From the thimble scheme the collection grew to gold and silver oddments of all kinds, which raised the magnificent sum of £30,000. This money paid for 12 motor ambulances/ two motor dental surgeries, five hospital river boats for Mesopotamia, and a number of grants to hospitals.
