HUNAN FIGHTING
JAPANESE WITHDRAWAL.
CHINESE SAY CHANGSHA NEVER LOST. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.15 p.m.) CHUNGKING, October 1. The Japanese Army Press Bureau stated that Japanese troops are evacuating Changsha, “having attained their objective, the dispersal of the Chinese defenders of the city.” The Associated Press of America quotes a Japanese Army announcement that all forces used in the Hunan drive vzill be withdrawn northward and that no attempt will be made to garrison Changsha. A Chinese Government spokesman, however, claimed that Changsha was still in Chinese hands. All. Japanese parachutists landed at Changsha had been killed or dispersed. He added that an encircling movement by Chinese troops in the northern part of the Hunan Province had been successful.
