HEAVY ENEMY CASUALTIES. ANTONESCU’S VAIN HOPES. LONDON, October 1. A Russian observer who has arrived in Moscow from Odessa stated that the German and Rumanian Ipsses around Odessa are estimated to have been 160,000 men. General Antonescu, the Rumanian dictator and Commander-in-Chief, twice arrived on the Odessa front with the idea of making a victorious entry into the besieged city. The first occasion was on August 23. He gave orders for the city to be taken by August 25, but the Rumanians failed to break through and suffered enormous losses. One Rumanian unit went entirely over to the Russians.
