MADE BY ALLIED COMMITTEES IN MOSCOW

Work Completed Two Days Ahead of Schedule GERMANS SUFFERING GREAT LOSSES IN LENINGRAD ZONE BATTLES IN THE UKRAINE AND ON APPROACHES TO CRIMEA LONDON, October 1. One of the biggest jobs of its kind has been completed by the six technical committees of the Three Power Conference in Moscow, two days ahead of schedule. The reports of the committees will be presented at once to a plenary meeting of the conference. Snow in the Ukraine and around Leningrad has come just in time to endorse a blunt warning to the German people that the terrific struggle on the Eastern front will go on through the winter. The latest news shows that the Germans are no nearer to capturing the great city of Leningrad, which they had hoped to occupy before the winter set in. The Germans claim to have bombed important industries in the city. The Russians are said to have recaptured a suburban town in • a fierce sortie east of the city. The Germans appear to be hard pressed elsewhere. It is estimated that the German casualties in two sectors on the Leningrad front are 100,000 men, 400 tanks, 800 aircraft and much other material. The German blitz against Leningrad is stated to have failed miserably, though the danger to the city is still grave. In the Ukraine, the enemy is believed to be making some progress towards the great industrial area in the Donetz Basin. A tremendous new battle is raging on the neck of the Crimea. The Germans are reported to have reached a point seven miles south of Perekop. There is no suggestion that the enemy has got through the bottleneck of the Perekop Isthmus. The Germans report that they have bombed Moscow again. A Russian expert says raids on Moscow have cost the Germans 170 planes in two months. Sir Archibald Sinclair, British Air Minister, announced that the R.A.F. wing in Russia is operating on the northern front. Mr Anthony Eden, British Foreign Secretary, states that Finland has not yet replied to the recent warning sent to her that she would be treated as an open enemy if she proceeded with her attack on Russia. The Finnish High Command claims the capture of a town far inside Russian territory. If this report is true, the capture of the town cuts the railway line to the Murmansk forces in the far north. '
