CRICKET
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING. . SENIOR ONE-DAY MATCHES. The annual meeting of the Wairarapa Cricket Association was held in Masterton last night. The president, Mr E. Sortain Smith presided. There were also present: Messrs L. Bellworthy, H. Corlett, F. Hoar, A. Bell (Red Star), D. Groves, W. Whiteman, A. Whiteman (Lansdowne), D. McMichael, G. Barr, J. Payne (Old Boys), J. E. Tier (College), A. L. Paterson (treasurer), and G. B. Peterson .(secretary). Prior to the commencement of business those present stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to the cricketers who had died since the last meeting of the association.
In formally moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet Mr Smith said that if cricket did not interfere with military duties it should be kept going. He thanked the Umpires’ Association and all who had assisted in any way. He particularly mentioned the work of the late Mr A. Styles. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr F. G. Maunsell; president, Mr E. Sortain Smith; ’ vice-presidents, Messrs L. J. Matthews, G. Masters, D. H. S. Riadiford, G. G. Hancox, I. McLeod, C. Perry; treasurer, Mr A. L. Paterson; secretary, Mr G. B. Peterson; delegates to the N.Z. Cricket Council, Mr lan Cromb; management committed, Messrs G. Barr, D. Groves. W. Whiteman, F. Hoar, and D. McMichael. It was decided to commence the season on Saturday, October 13, and, io continue the junior competition on the same lines as last year's. After some discussion it was agreed, by a majority of one vote, to hold oneday senior cricket matches and not two-day matches. The captains of the senior teams, it was decided, would toss at 1.25 p.m. and play would start promptly at 1.30, afternoon tea to be discontinued and play to continue until 6 p.m. If the captain of a team was not present at 1.25 p.m. he would forfeit the'toss. The first, team to bat would continue to do so, if necessary, until 4 p.m., and the captains would be required to get the teams on the held again as soon as possible and within ten minutes. It was agreed to forward a letter of appreciation to the Umpires’ Association in recognition of its services curing the past season. A recommendation was made to the management committee to go into Lie possibility of a club being formed in Carterton. A cup donated by Messrs Elliott and Co. for the best fielder in the senior competition last season, was presented by Mr Sortain Smith to A. Bell, of the Red Star Club.
