f SOLDIERS’ PARCELS PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE’S ACTIVITIES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The members of the Carterton and District Patriotic Committee were busy ■ during the weekend packing parcels for soldiers on active service overseas, and as a result 192 Christmas parcels were forwarded to Wellington on Monday. ST. MARK’S CHURCH CONFIRMATION SERVICE. Last evening at St Mark’s Anglican Church, Bishop St Barbe Holland, of Wellington, conducted a confirmation service, in the presence of a large congregation. Before the commencement of the service the Bishop consecrated a carved oak organ screen to the memory of the late Mrs Clara Armstrong, who for many years worshipped at the church. House Damaged by Fire. At 4 o’clock 'yesterday afternoon a call was received-to a burning house at the intersection of Rexwood and Garrison Street, occupied by Mr Jordan. It appears that Mrs Jordan was removing some fat from the oven when it caught alight and burnt her hands. She dropped the dish and tried to extinguish the flames but the fat set fire to the room. The fire burnt its way to the ceiling through the linen cupboard and the roof was soon ablaze. The promptitude of the firemen and a splendid pressure of water saved the building from being totally destroyed. Considerable damage was done to furniture in adjacent rooms by water and smoke. Golf. The following is the draw for a ladies’ Stableford bogey round to be played on Saturday: Mrs Colson v Mrs Murray; Mrs Johansen v Miss Smart; Mrs Moroney v Mrs Harrington; Mrs Robinson v Miss Booth; Miss Lamb v Miss I. Corlett; Miss Peters v Miss J. Orr; Mrs Orr v Miss Armstrong; Miss Hamer v Mrs Knowles; Mrs Court v Miss V. Corlett; Miss Lindop v Mrs Martin; Mrs Bredin v Miss Lawrence. Mrs Moroney and Mrs Harrington are in charge of afternoon tea. Men members of the local golf club Will arrange their own partners for | a medal and eclectic competition on / the Carterton links on Saturday. E.P.S. Corps. , Six spirit bucket pumps for use in case of emergency by members of the E.P.S. Corps, have been forwarded from Wellington and are to be distributed throughout the town. Personal Items. The condition of Mr H. T. Leete, who is an inmate of the Greytown Hospital, continues to improve. Mrs J. M. Osborne, of Horsham Downs, Hamilton, is visiting her sister, Miss Armstrong, Park Road, Carterton. Bowling/ A rink of bowlers will represent the local, club at the opening of the Martinborough green on Saturday next. Vital Statistics, In September there were 7 births, one marriage and 1 death in Carterton. For the past quarter the figures are: Births, 20; marriages, 7; deaths, 8.
