GERMANS ON THE EASTERN FRONT
Leningrad Defenders More and More Aggressive I HEAVY AND POWERFUL RUSSIAN ATTACKS IN UKRAINE SECOND R.A.F. CONTINGENT OPERATING LOXDOX. September 30. No notable change is reported in the position on the Eastern front. It is believed in London that the Russians are holding the Germans everywhere. In the Leningrad area the Russians say that their resistance is more and more effective and more offensive. The Germans claim to have captured 200 Russian pillboxes in operations extending throughout Sunday and yesterday. In the Ukraine, Berlin reports very heavy and powerful Russian attacks at several points. Berlin also supports Italian claims of a local success, in which 5,000 prisoners were captured, east of the Dnieper. The Moscow radio reports sustained attacks by the Russian Air Force on German aerodromes, in which Soviet bombers and fighters destroyed 73 enemy planes.
The Germans claim to have sent a detachment of their Air Force to Moscow and Leningrad last night, and state that - German warships have shelled targets in the Leningrad area. According to a Russian statement, a second contingent of the R.A.F. is operating successfully over the battlefront. A military agreement has been concluded between Russia and Czechoslovakia. It provides for the raising of a Czechoslovak army in Russia.
The Poles hope soon to be able to add a third division to the forces already raised in Russia.
