Mr W. H. Saunders, Essex Street, Maslcrton, left today for Waimate, where his father died last night at the age of 87 years. Captain E. R. Black, M.C., has been selected as the National Party candidate for the Gisborne seat, now held by Mr D. W. Coleman (Labour). Mr S. H. Mason, postmaster in Taihape, has retired on superannuation after 414 years’ service. He served throughout the last war with the New Zealand Forces, and resumed duties in Wellington on his return from Europe in 1919. At the annual meeting of the Mas-terton-Opaki Rifle Club a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr A. E. Clemas for his excellent work in auditing the books of the club. He was unanimously elected auditor for the ensuing season. Mr Lewis Donald Mclver, head of the commercial department of King Edward Technical College and lecturer in auditing at the University of Otago, was last night chosen as the National Party’s candidate for Dunedin North. He is a returned soldier and was born in Gore in 1898. The death has occurred in Takaka of Mr Louis Carmine. Mr Carmine, who was 98 years old, was born in Switzerland. In 1860 he left Liverpool for Australia. He later took part in the gold rushes in New Zealand, and was associated with the late Rt Hon R. J. Seddon in goldmining ventures on the West Coast. Subsequently he went to Sydney and there married Miss Catherine Concannon. For fifteen years he had resided at Takaka. The surviving members of the family are Messrs J. P. Carmine (Takaka), C. A. Carmine (Masterton), J. F. L. Carmine (Paeroa), L. V. Carmine (Wellington), J. F. Carmine (Nelson), the Rev F. J. Carmine (parish priest at Pungarehuß and the Rev P. A. Carmine, (Broken Hill, N.S.W.).
