NEW GERMAN DRIVE TOWARDS MOSCOW
Force of Thirteen Divisions Hurled Back ENEMY SUFFERS 20,000 CASUALTIES MUCH MATERIAL CAPTURED BY RUSSIANS LONDON, September 29. The complete rout of a new German drive towards Moscow is reported by the Russians. The plan was to break through towards Moscow between a point 70 miles south-east of Smolensk and Bryansk. A Russian counter-attack threw the whole plan cut of gear. The Soviet forces launched a series of counterattacks on a front 50 miles wide. The Germans were bulled back. Thirteen German divisions were engaged and they suffered 20,000 casualties, besides losing 500 armoured cars, 1,500 lorries, 200 guns and quantities of other material. The retreat cruiser of the Koln class. The German cruiser reported to have been sunk by tne Russians is said to be a 6,000-ton vessel, mounting nine 6in. guns and 14 anti-aircraft guns. If this is so, it is the last German cruiser of the Kohn class.
