Raids Extend from Sardinia to Abyssinia. MUCH DAMAGE DONE ON LAND AND SEA ENCOUNTERS WITH ENEMY FIGHTERS LONDON, September 28. A Middle East Air Force communique reports continued attacks on the enemy from Sardinia to the mountains of Abyssinia. In Sardinia, aerodromes and seaplane bases were attacked and a large number of seaplanes damaged. In Sicily aircraft on the ground were extensively damaged and an electric light plant and other objectives were hit. In the Gulf of Taranto a merchant ship was bombed and set on fire. Bardia was also attacked. In almost all places enemy fighters were encountered and many were damaged. In other engagements, one Messerschmitt was shot down and others badly damaged. Five of our aircraft are missing. An army communique states that a South African patrol captured a staff car with feur Italian officers. The position at Tobruk is quiet, with ineffective enemy artillery fire. In Abyssinia an Italian garrison in a military stronghold north of Gondar has surrendered to British and patriot forces. Gondar is now the only place of any size in Abyssinia in enemy hands.
