St. John Ambulance Dance. The St. John Ambulance Brigade is sparing no effort to ensure that the dance to be held in the Masonic Hall. Masterton, on Wednesday night, will be one of the best yet held. The proceeds will be allocated to toe fund to purchase Christmas parcels for Brigade members serving overseas. Druids’ Dance. There was a very- large attendance at the Druids’ Lodge dance on Saturday night in the Orange Hall. The music was supplied by Messrs J. West and S. Taylor, 'an extra being played by Mr H. Hood. The Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss M. Gordon and Mr A. Rose. Mr R. Pawson made an excellent M.C., and the supper was provided by a capable ladies’ committee. The gathering was one of the most enjoyable yet held by the lodge. Fire at Invercargill. Portion of the New Zealand Express Company’s two-storey brick building in Invercargill recently taken over’ by H. and H. Motors was gutted by fire on Saturday. Furniture stored on behalf of clients was destroyed, also food products, disinfectants, tyres, and plywood held on consignment, the damage to such being estimated at £3,000. Seven trucks and two cars in the garage on the bottom floor were saved before the roof caved in. Motor Car Catches Fire. When Mr T. Kitchen was driving his small motor-car home to Fernhill on Saturday night flames suddenly burst i from beneath the bonnet and the driver scarcely had time to stop and alight before the vehicle was enveloped in flames. Trying to stop the fire he lost his overcoat and burned his hands. When a mechanic went out yesterday to tow the car to Hastings he found that the only remaining good tyre had been stolen during the night. He went to a house to telephone and m his absence someone stole the tools. Youth’s Remarkable Escape. A remarkable escape from serious injury was had by Gordon Thompson, aged 17, when he fell beneath a set of discs being drawn by the tractor he was driving on his father's farm at Pakowhai (Hawke’s Bay) on Saturday i afternoon. He received cuts and abrasions necessitating medical attention. Thompson was swept from the seat ol the tractor by a low-hanging branch and the double set of discs passed over him. After some time he was able to drive the tractor to his home some distance away, arriving dazed and with his clothing badly torn.
