FIGHTER PLANES
USE IN DEFENCE OF CONVOYS REPORTED IN NEW YORK. MA CHINES CATAPULTED FROM SHIPS. 'Ey Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, September 26. A New York message reports a new development in the battle of the Atlantic. It states that fighter planes are being catapulted from the decks of British merchant ships to protect convoys between Iceland and Britain, from German aircraft. After the fighting is over the planes try to make for the shore, but if the distance is too great for their limited supply of petrol the machine is brought down on the sea near the convoy and the crew then take to a rubber raft. This is not confirmed in London.
