A Moscow radio message states that the Germans made a. strong infantry and tank attack in the south-west sector of the Leningrad front on September 24. Soviet infantry checked the main onslaught, but a, few tanks penetrated the Russian first line. However, as soon'as they encountered Russian tanks the Germans were driven back to their original positions, incurring heavy losses. The Tass Agency says Odessa is being subjected to a growing artillery and aerial bombardment, but the defenders are holding firm. The Rumanians have suffered further heavy losses. The Russians claim that the Black Sea Fleet Air Arm destroyed 26 German planes, 22 guns and numerous lorries and armoured cars. Soviet fighters last night, at a great altitude, shot down five German planes attempting to reach Moscow. It is authoritatively stated that British ; tanks may soon be in action in Russia. The Russian mission selected the most powerful types, which are being delivered by every system of transport at present open.
