BUILDING FRAUDS
ON EXTENSIVE SCALE ALLEGED JN BRITAIN. INVESTIGATION BY SCOTLAND YARD. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, September 24. Scotland Yard is investigating alleged widespread frauds by builders carrying out Government contracts for war damage repairs for local councils. A number of prosecutions are pending. The “Daily Telegraph” says some contractors, working on a guaranteed 10 to 12J per cent profit on cost, are said to have shown in their books as employees the names of dozens of men who do not exist. Many cases are reported of builders obtaining council contracts although they have only one gang who work for a few hours in each district, the employers receiving payment for full time gangs in each area. Architects checking up on repairs for which builders had claimed payment found that they had been shoddily carried out or had not even been started. Collusion between builders and householders to obtain excessive payments from the War Damages Department is also being investigated.
