CIVIC LUNCHEON

LARGE & REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING ■ VICE-REGAL VISITORS ENTERTAINED. I WAIRARAPA AS “PROMISED I LAND." There was a large and fully representative gathering at the civic luncheon tendered their Excellencies, Sir Cyril and Lady Newall, at the Midland Hotel. The Mayor of Masterto'n, Mr T. Jordan, presided. The loyal toast was honoured. In proposing the toast of “Their Excellencies,” Mr J. W. Card, Mayor of Featherston, extended a welcome to Sir Cyril and Lady Newall on behalf of the people of the Wairarapa. He referred briefly | to the work of colonisation which had been carried out by the early settlers, and paid tribute to their high ideals. In'reply, Sir Cyril Newall stated that he had often looked forward to visiting the “promised land” ever the mountain barrier. He mentioned having met Mr Jordan in Auckland and stated that in his capacity of President of the Municipal Association of New Zealand he was carrying out work of national importance with great efficiency. His Excellency returned thanks for the cordial welcome extended to himself and Lady Newall. The guests invited were: The Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan and the Mayoress, Mrs Jordan; Mr J.
