Gathering of Children in Masterton Park OFFICIAL LUNCHEON AND CIVIC RECEPTION Their Excellencies, Sir Cyril Nowall and Lady Newall, made an official visit to Masterton today. Although the weather was not as fine and sunny as has recently been the case, the conditions were not unfavourable and Ihe arrangements were carried out according to schedule. The town was gaily beflagged for the occasion. On their arrival at the Hotel Midland, their Excellencies were met by the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, and the Mayoress, Airs Jordan, and by the Town Clerk, Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith. Their Excellencies were accompanied by Wing Commander H. C. Bevan, military secretary, and Captain C. J. Holland-Martin, Aide-de-Camp. In accordance with the expressed wisli of Sir Cyril Newall, a combined gathering of school children was held at Masterton Park, commencing at 11.45 a.m. The Guard ol Honour was provided by Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. On their arrival, their Excellencies were met by the Mayor, who presented the principals and headmasters of local colleges and schools, the chairmen of local school committees and the leaders of the Girl Guide and Boy Scout movements. Sir Cyril Newall briefly addressed the assembled children. At a reception held at the Hotel Midland representative citizens, including members of borough and county councils, other local bodies and members of Parliament were presented to their Excellencies. A civic luncheon followed, commencing at 1 p.m., to which local body representatives from throughout, the Wairarapa were among the invited guests. A civic reception was tendered to their Excellencies at the Municipal Hall at 2.15 p.m., at which the formal address from the district was read and presented by the Mayor (Mr Jordan). After Sir Cyril Newall gave his formal reply, addresses were delivered by Mr Jordan, by Mr R. E. Gordon Lee (chairman of the Masterton County Council) and by Mr J. Robertson, member for Masterton. Sir Cyril Newall then replied. Later, their Excellencies visited the Masterton Hospital. Sir Cyril Newall then made a brief call at the Masterton Club and Lady Newall visited the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild rooms and the Ranfurly Club. Their Excellencies left later in the afternoon for Wellington.
