SOVIET ATTACK

PENETRATES TO ENEMY REAR GENERAL & STAFF OFFICERS KILLED. STOUT DEFENCE OF ODESSA. LONDON. September 22. Moscow announces that a Russian attack on the Leningrad front penetrated to the German rear, resulting in a German general and four staff officers being killed. A Berlin report today says that east of Kiev the Germans thrusting toward Kharkov have met a heavy Russian counter-attack at Poltava, which the Germans claimed to have captured several days ago. After more than six weeks of fighting, the defenders of Odessa are still battering the enemy, who have made strong attacks. Odessa has replied to the message of the commander at Tobruk, saying that as long as the citizens have a drop of blood left they will go into battle.
